Day13: Atapuerca to Burgos (Thurs 7th Oct)

Today is the first big milestone - BURGOS!!

We start the day on the road out of Atapuerca only to be greeted with lava type rocky path - seriously what is with the ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Arggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Luckily it is only an 18km day - another short day but painful - the rocks at the start do not bode well and the long long neverending path into Burgos is a mind bender!!! Everyone comments on the "Burgos Bender"! Once we FINALLY arrive at the Alburgue in Burgos, its modern and only 2 years old - its great and the facilities fab. Once settled after the crazy queue to get in - it only opens at 2pm so the line up is manic when you´re tired and you´re feet are in pergatory!

Showered and washing done, FOOD is the next major important item....just in time before siesta - its such a timing game with siesta - for buying food if you want to cook or just buying supplies and the Farmacia - which is the next important place for Pilgrims!!! Tape, bandages, betadine, compeed, sunblock, gauze!!!  Glen, Brit and myself decide to wander through Burgos during siesta, it´s quite and peaceful for a city but when its sleeping its perfect! Gelati in the piazza and lots of fun for photographers. Trying to find a supermercado in city wasn´t so easy and we needed supplies for the next day as our first big day on the meseta with no places to stop....we get drowned in a sudden and unexpected downpour - not happiness for Pilgrims with limited clothing about to go and have dinner....hehe!

There is a large group of us that come and go and we all meet in Burgos and wander off to find the best place for Pilgrim menu....takes us around the city and back to the Bar next to the Alburgue where we sleep....lots of continuous red wine and food and stories - wonderful and funny night!

Lights out at the city Alburgues like the country ones, so we all scoot back inside with 2 mins to spare at 10.28pm!!

  1. I meant to add....about 30 beds in each of the dorms here in Burgos - and 3 levels so a lot of people - each floor has its own toilets and showers BUT for 30 people ONLY 2 toilets and 5 showers....5 showers is ok - as people come in at different times during the day and shower immediately, so its not a huge problem and no one showers in the morning - its a big NO NO for Pilgrims - soft damp feet NOOOOO!!! but only TWO toilets for the morning was beyond crazy....LOL!!
